What is Uejo Castle Ruins?
Uejo Castle Ruins" on Kume Island are the ruins of a castle built during the Ryukyu Kingdom period, and is one of the most important tourist spots where visitors can learn about the history of Kume Island.
The highest of the "gusuku" castles scattered throughout Okinawa Prefecture, it was built on the summit of "Mt. Uejo," about 310 meters above sea level on Kumejima.
Excavations have unearthed a large number of Chinese ceramics and porcelain, and it is believed that trade with China was conducted even before the unification of the Ryukyu Dynasty.
How to play at the ruins of Uejo Castle
By taking a leisurely stroll through the ruins of the castle, visitors can learn about the history of Kumejima.
The view from the top of the mountain is 360 degrees, offering not only a panoramic view of the entire island of Kumejima, but also a magnificent panoramic view of the neighboring islands and even the main island of Okinawa on a clear day.
It is also famous for the beautiful sunset from the ruins of Uejo Castle. At night, visitors can enjoy a natural planetarium with a star-filled sky.
